The Award for Design Excellence

Jordan toothbrushes for children have received The Award for Design Excellence. "Yes, Jordan knows how". Such is the way the Norwegian Design Council concluded its basis for awarding the Award for Design Excellence to Jordan's new series of children's toothbrushes.

"Jordan demonstrates good insight into the situation around brushing teeth and makes playful and user-friendly products" as was also stated in their basis for the award.

The Award for Design Excellence is a distinction that recognises successful use of design to create innovative products and solutions.

The development of the new brushes has been done by Jordan in cooperation with the Norwegian industrial design firm GeriljaWorks and the advertising agency of Momentum Sweden.

"For us the development of the brushes was a fun challenge. In addition to making dental hygiene enjoyable, it was especially important to maintain optimal user-friendliness for both parents and children," says Markus Hoy-Petersen of GeriljaWorks.

A toothbrush that looks like a toy makes brushing teeth more exciting for young children. The playful aspect can help a child develop good habits for brushing teeth and avoiding cavities which can remain with them throughout their lives. It is also ergonomically designed, which makes it comfortable to hold for both children and parents.

"We know that one in five five-year-olds, along with over half of all 12 year-olds, have cavities. While the authorities have put the spotlight on diet and sugar consumption among children, Jordan wishes to put good routines for dental care on the agenda. By introducing toothbrushes that are carefully adapted for each age group - both in terms of functionality and motivation - Jordan seeks to inspire children and their parents to improve their children's dental health," says Thomas M. Kristensen, Division Manager for Personal & Home Care.

Dentists and dental hygienists recommend that parents let their children select their own toothbrush and make teeth brushing a fun part of grooming in the morning and evenings. Jordan has taken this seriously and has now developed toothbrushes that aim to make teeth brushing more playful.

"Jordan wishes to provide inspiration for better dental health. We want taking good care of your teeth to be enjoyable. The children's toothbrushes in the Step by step series are therefore specially adapted to various age groups both in terms of educational features and motivation. In this way, Jordan aims to help create good brushing habits for life," says Kristensen.

The basis for the jury's decision:
"Jordan has taken a creative and innovative approach with regards to the new toothbrushes for children in age groups 3 to 5 years and 6 to 9 years old. Jordan has insight into the situation around brushing teeth and has developed a time glass for the 3 to 5 year-old age group, which shows the child correct brushing time of two minutes. This is a playful and user-friendly idea. For 6 to 9 year-olds, a toothbrush has been developed that is especially effective for brushing when the child has a combination of baby teeth and permanent teeth. The illustration is timely and relevant for the target group. The charm in the end of the toothbrush, which can be used for storage of the toothbrush on the mirror, is a fun way to create an ownership relation to one's toothbrush. The ergonomics and shape are suited to small child hands. "Yes, Jordan knows how."
